Centre for Health and Social Justice is a non-profit institution working on public health and reproductive health and rights issues. For details of our work please visit our website www.chsj.org .Centre for Social Justice in collaboration with SAHAYOG (Lucknow) and the University of Edinburgh are in partnership for a research project “Tracing pharmaceuticals in South Asia: regulation, distribution and consumption”. This research is led by a research group at the University of Edinburgh, including members of the Centre for International Public Health Policy and the research network on the Sociology and Anthropology of Health and Illness. The study will integrate anthropological, public health and political economic approaches. Applications are invited for a post of research associate. She/he will be based within Centre for Health and Social Justice, in Delhi.Responsibilities will include• To work closely with researchers from Edinburgh University and CHSJ• To conduct qualitative research and data collection. This will involve undertaking ethnographic and interview based research and data collection with a range of participants• To conduct comprehensive literature searches, including research literature, industry literature, company reports, and internal documents, as well as journal and media writings (in both Hindi and English) in India• To assist in the translation of taped transcripts and key documents – from Hindi to English, and vice versa – including academic / policy papers produced
• To collect and assist in analysing data on marketing strategies of both local and international pharmaceutical companies as related to India and to collect and assist in analysing legal and policy documents relating to medicine regulation and review the laws as pertaining to India
• To code the interview transcripts using ATLAS .TI, a software for qualitative analysis of data.
• To be responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a database and resource of literature on pharmaceuticals in relation to India at the Centre for Health and Social Justice
• To assist with the organisation of any workshop connected with the project
• To work with and assist in the coordination of visits of any other members of the research team on visits to IndiaThe following qualifications, skills and experiences are expected in the research associate.
• A post-graduate degree in public health, or the social sciences (for example anthropology or sociology)
• A working knowledge of public policy issues, especially as these relate to health care provision or medicines and medical regulation in the context of India
• Experience in a relevant research field such as social science or health related research in relation to public policy, marketisation and privatisation, regulation and governance
• Fluent in both spoken and written English and Hindi.
• Awareness of current debates about public service governance in relation to globalisation
• Excellent written and oral communication in both English and Hindi.
• Experience of writing in the media and/or for an academic audience in both English and Hind
• An understanding of qualitative research methods
• Trained to use ATLAS. TI software for coding transcripts.
